The fortress, as it is today, was built in the 14th century by the Dal Verme family. The fort that existed here before, dating back to the 10th century, was destroyed by Frederick Barbarossa in 1164. It has an irregular plan and its walls were built with stream stones and pebbles.
The fortress is now the headquarters of the Town Hall and of the Archaeological museum.
