IIts history is identified with the Abbey history, founded in 614, by Saint Columbanus, which in the Dark Ages became one of the main seats of religious culture in Italy, with a famous scriptorium and a famous library.  Following the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy, the town was annexed to Pavia and only in 1923 did Bobbio return to the province of Piacenza.

The centre was built in stone around the abbey and surrounded by walls and includes numerous monuments: the Cathedral, the Malaspina Castle, the famous Ponte Vecchio also called the   Hunchback Bridge for the peculiarities of its structure
Throughout the year, Bobbio offers numerous cultural activities ranging from classical music concerts to those of popular music, from movie screenings in cinemas and outdoors during the warm season (Marco Bellocchio has choosen Bobbio  as the site for his course in film technology), parties and conferences.
