ECCE HOMO BY ANTONELLO DA MESSINA

Monuments, Squares and Palaces
Antonello da Messina, Ecce Homo, ph

One of the most important masterpieces of the painter from Messina has been kept in Piacenza since 1761, and belongs to cardinal Giulio Alberoni’s(1664-1752) bequest to the boarding school he had founded in 1752, where it is still preserved .
This portrait of Christ, an oil on canvas, was carried out in 1470 and confirmed Antonello as one of the protagonists of the revolution which involved private devotion images, and was a consequence of the experimentation and iconographic entrichment favoured, in the 15th century, by the relationship between Italy and the Flanders.
