CYCLING ON THE WATERSHED BETWEEN TREBBIA AND NURE VALLEYS

Outdoor itineraries
Castellaro, Val Trebbia, ph. Angelo Battaglia

The central Trebbia Valley is ideal for mountain-biking. We propose and average difficulty itinerary enabling mountain-bike lovers to know and appreciate interesting parts of the watershed beteween Trebbia and Nure Valleys, a natural element connecting the two valleys. The track also allows visitors to admire the ancient, restored Castellaro’s sanctuary, sacred since ancient times (as confirmed by the toponym recalling ancient celt-ligurian origins).
THE TRACK: Departure is from Quadrelli di Travo’s church, frescoed by the painter Ricchetti. From there you take (at the first junction on the right) a path that, after about 2 Km and a half, will take the Mountain-biker first to Stazzano and then to “Ca Inglese” : this place offers a nice view of the river and of the whole valley .At the end of the path take a steep sheep track(difficult to cycle) in the underwood. Such track will shortly leave, after crossing a streamlet, to Viserano’s cemetery. Here take the asphalted road to Passo della Pia. After some bends and going along the trunk road for about 3 km, the biker will reach a junction to “I Dodici”. taking the non-asphalted road on the left you’ll soon reach a peculiar group of houses witnessing our Apennine’s past. Here starts the off route part of the itinerary . Take, in the village centre, a slight descent of some hundred metres, which will soon become a “single trek” leading. amid chestnut groves, to Montebello. After Montebello the bridle path begins to descend quicly. The path subsequently leads to “Amaini” , where it meets the provincial road coming from Quadrelli and leading first to Chiulano and then to. Carrying on in this direction, on the left towrds Nure Valley, after 500 m you’ll reach another open space. On the letf, in ascent, you’ll foind the sheep-track which will lead, after 300 metres, to Castellaro’s oratory. From here you can go downwards (junction on the right before the little church) till you reach the trunk road. When you reach the road, bike for 2 km up to Chiulano. After leaving the non-asphalted road and entering Chiulano, the path proceeds towards Monte del Denavolo:take the bridle path on the right of the church and, after a fountain, the sheep-track will start ascending and will sdhortlky lead to a farmhouse located on the watershed between Trebbia and Nure Valleys. The itinerary requires some more fatigue, both on flatland and in ascent, up to a junction at about 500 m from the farmhouse. Here a steep stone path will lead the most adventurous ones to the peak (stay on the left of the pass).A descending path will reach, after a 2 km descent, Denavolo little village. Descending on the asphalt (about 3 km) you’ll arrive back in Quadrelli.
