The Teatro San Matteo stands inside an ancient church along what is now called Via Taverna. In ancient times this street marked the entrance of the Via Postumia into the city.

Inside the church building there was an altar of the Columbus family, from which the discoverer of the Americas, Christopher, descended.
The activity of the San Matteo Theatre
The theater’s activities revolve around two basic strands: evening programming of art, comedy and research theater and daytime programming for children, with afternoon shows for families and morning shows for schools.
The theater offers a small space, about two hundred seats, which has nonetheless allowed for an increasingly close contact with spectators, contributing to the renewal of the theatrical audience in the city and territory.
