Palazzo Farnese presents an exhibition dedicated to the prophetic female figures of the Sibyls, highlighting their role in art history and their connection to the city’s artistic heritage.
From Rome’s Galleria Borghese comes Domenico Zampieri’s La Sibilla cumana (The Cumaean Sibyl), known as Domenichino, a 17th-century masterpiece that embodies the classical and vibrant interpretation of the prophetess. The work, which will be the centrepiece of the exhibition, dialogues with the contemporary world thanks to the presence of eight Sibylline sculptures in Persian red travertine and iron by the Piacenza artist Christian Zucconi.
In fact, the project stems from a desire to highlight the importance of the Sibyls in the context of Piacenza: depicted in various places of worship in the city, they appear in Piacenza Cathedral, on the 16th-century dome of Santa Maria di Campagna and in the Basilica of San Francesco.
Together, these works offer a journey that starts with Pordenone, Malosso, Guercino and Domenichino and ends with Zucconi’s contemporary sculpture and sound, demonstrating the vitality and resonance of the Sibylline myth as a universal prophetic archetype that echoes through the centuries.
