It’s not easy to establish the time of the construction of the bridge that connects the old Bobbio with the right bank of the River Trebbia.
Several activities were already happening on that side of the river, in the pre-Columban time, such as the salt marshes of the Lombard leader Sundrarit, and the furnace of the Rio Gambado.
The Stone Bridge is also known as “Hunchback” for the irregularity of its 11 arches and as the Devil’s Bridge for the legend that it was built by demons in a single night in exchange of the soul of the first person who crossed it.
