San Colombano Abbey is in the centre of Bobbio.
Its construction started at the end of the 9th century, when the Abbot Agilulph (883-96) decided to transfer the whole complex in a lower position.
The medieval village bearing the primitive name of Bobium started to grow around the large monastery area. Its development increased when the village became episcopal town.
It is possible to visit the Basilica, the Abbey Museum, the internal Cloister and the town museum, located in the the former refectory, hand-washing rooms and cellars, recently restored.
