Manifesto Exhibition by Rosefeldt – XNL Piacenza

Exhibitions

On September 18th, XNL Piacenza inaugurates its autumn program of the Art section, curated by Paola Nicolin, with Manifesto, by German artist and film director Julian Rosefeldt.

The Work

Manifesto consists in a 13-channel video installation, with a site-specific redesign for XNL and created in collaboration with the publishing house Electa. The work gives voice to 20th-century artistic manifestos through thirteen short films, each with a different setting, but all, aside from the prologue, starring Cate Blanchett. The two-time Oscar-winning actress portrays thirteen characters, mostly female, who recite texts made up of a collage of manifestos from thirteen artistic movements. The installation poses questions, rather than giving answers, rejecting any dogmatic position, just as the manifestos themselves would once do.

The exhibition marks the tenth anniversary of the work’s first presentation at the ACMI, Australian Centre for the Moving Image, in Melbourne.

The artist

Julian Rosefeldt, a German artist born in Munich and living in Berlin, expresses his interest in society and socio-political issues by creating works that aim to stimulate change. It is a call to have faith in the possibility of changing the world, a concept that underpins the many manifestos taken into consideration in the creation of these video installations. In his use of images, the author is recognizable in his frequent use of aerial shots and the sophistication of his video construction.

The exhibition

The display runs from September 18th to November 25th at XNL.
