Piacenza defined as ‘Terra di passo(Land of Passage)’ by Leonardo da Vinci in the Atlantic Codex has always played a fundamental role as a crossroads and passage.
As part of the Jubilee dedicated to pilgrims, which began on 24 December 2024 with the opening of the Holy Door in the Vatican City, the territory of Piacenza is an a must-do stage for all pilgrims coming from the north and heading towards Rome.
The best known route that also crosses the city of Piacenza is certainly the Via Francigena. However, the pilgrims who crossed the territory with religious motivations were not limited to the plain route and the crossing of the Apennines in today’s Parma territory. Throughout history, the devotion, origin and spiritual quest of these wayfarers have traced alternative routes to Rome that are still travelled by modern pilgrims.
