{"id":22560,"date":"2020-11-30T11:04:42","date_gmt":"2020-11-30T10:04:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/visitpiacenza.it\/arte-e-cultura\/san-sisto-church\/"},"modified":"2026-03-05T13:11:34","modified_gmt":"2026-03-05T12:11:34","slug":"san-sisto-church","status":"publish","type":"arte-e-cultura","link":"https:\/\/visitpiacenza.it\/en\/art-and-culture\/san-sisto-church\/","title":{"rendered":"San Sisto\u2019s Church"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Church of San Sisto in Piacenza is an excellent example of Renaissance architecture.<\/p>\n<h3>History of San Sisto<\/h3>\n<p>It has very ancient origins: Empress <strong>Angilberga<\/strong>, wife of Emperor Louis the Pious, founded it in 874 with an adjoining Benedictine convent. In 882, Angilberga also became abbess of the monastery and died there in 889.<br \/>\nIn 1112, at the behest of <strong>Matilda of Canossa<\/strong>, the monastery was ceded to Benedictine monks. They, in turn, had to cede it to the nuns of St. Clare of the Order of St. Damian and then to St. Sixtus and St. Francis.<\/p>\n<h3>Architecture and works<\/h3>\n<p>The current church was built between 1499 and 1511 and is Alessio Tramello&#8217;s first work (in sacred architecture).<br \/>\nThe <strong>fa\u00e7ade<\/strong>, modified in the 18th century, is preceded by a large porticoed courtyard.<br \/>\nThe interior of the Church of San Sisto, with its three naves, is a fine example of early Renaissance architecture, with beautiful paintings by<strong> Procaccini, Pittoni, Palma il Giovane and dei Campi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Raphael&#8217;s Sistine Madonna<\/h3>\n<p>At the back, above the high altar, is a copy of Raphael&#8217;s masterpiece, the Sistine Madonna, created especially for the church in Piacenza.<br \/>\nThe <strong>original<\/strong> was sold by the Benedictines in 1754 to Augustus III, King of Poland and Elector of Saxony, and is now the most valuable piece in the <a href=\"https:\/\/gemaeldegalerie.skd.museum\/ausstellungen\/gemaeldegalerie-alte-meister-und-skulpturensammlung-bis-1800\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dresden Museum<\/a>.<br \/>\nThe wooden choir stalls, carved by Bartolomeo Spinelli da Busseto and Giampiero Panbianchi da Colorno (1514), are also noteworthy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Outstanding renaissance temple having ancient origin: the empress Angilberga (wife of Ludwig the Pious) founded it in 874, together with an adjacent Benedictine nunnery. The three nave interior is a valuable example of early Renaissance architecture with beautiful paintings by Procaccini, Pittoni, Palma il Giovane, dei Campi. The original painting was sold in 1754 by the Benedictines to August 3rd, king of Poland, and today its the most valuable painting in Dresdas museum.
