Over the centuries, its defensive function has become intertwined with that of a stately home, without losing its essence as a defensive fortress.<\/p>\n<h3>The history of the castle<\/h3>\n<p>Among the families who have owned it are the Pagani, Arcelli, Figliagadi and Leone families.<br \/>\nFollowing the period of Visconti rule, the castle gradually lost its defensive function and, as its use as a stately home became predominant, its appearance was adapted to these new requirements.<\/p>\n<p>Under the <strong>Leoni<\/strong> family, between the 17th and 18th centuries, Lisignano was transformed into a noble residence. Elegance and opulence in the architectural details took precedence over the previous simplicity. The work of <strong>Ferdinando Galli Bibiena<\/strong> is a fine example of the style of that period: the halls were enlarged and the spaces harmonised.<\/p>\n<p>In the 20th century, the castle found new custodians in the <strong>Maestri family<\/strong>, who continued to maintain the fortress\u2019s defensive function during the Second World War, when they sheltered displaced persons and even partisans.<\/p>\n<h3>Guided tours<\/h3>\n<p>The castle\u2019s long history can now be appreciated thanks to special openings with scheduled guided tours.<br \/>\nDates are available on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.castellodilisignano.com\/visite-castello-piacenza\/\">official website<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The origins of Lisignano Castle, in Val Luretta, date back to around the year 1000, when it was built to defend the countryside from foreign invasions.
