Lisignano Castle

Art and Culture
Gazzola, Castello di Lisignano, ph. Giuseppe Morganti

The origins of Lisignano Castle, in Val Luretta, date back to around the year 1000, when it was built to defend the countryside from foreign invasions. Over the centuries, its defensive function has become intertwined with that of a stately home, without losing its essence as a defensive fortress.

The history of the castle

Among the families who have owned it are the Pagani, Arcelli, Figliagadi and Leone families.
Following the period of Visconti rule, the castle gradually lost its defensive function and, as its use as a stately home became predominant, its appearance was adapted to these new requirements.

Under the Leoni family, between the 17th and 18th centuries, Lisignano was transformed into a noble residence. Elegance and opulence in the architectural details took precedence over the previous simplicity. The work of Ferdinando Galli Bibiena is a fine example of the style of that period: the halls were enlarged and the spaces harmonised.

In the 20th century, the castle found new custodians in the Maestri family, who continued to maintain the fortress’s defensive function during the Second World War, when they sheltered displaced persons and even partisans.
