S. SEPOLCRO CHURCH

Religious architecture
Chiesa S. Sepolcro, ph Archivio Comune di Piacenza

San Sepolcro, designed by Alessio Tramello, was built between 1513 and 1533 for the Olivetans; during Napoleon’s time it was transformed into military hospital and was reopended to cult only in 1903.

Next to the church there is the former Olivetans Monastery, with two nice cloisters enclosed in the Municipal Hospitals area.

The name apparently derives from a pilgrm from Piacenza who had just come back from Jerusalem Holy Sepulchre and founded on this area a cult building which was subsequently destroyed.
The façade has flying buttresses, which enhance its verticality, and a baroque portal; the interior is large, with pillars and is characterised by frescoed chiaroscuro decorations unravelling like a ribbon.

In 2015, the Church of San Sepolcro was handed over to the Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Italy. The ancient temple has changed from Catholic to Orthodox, while remaining Christian.
The temple is managed by the Patriarchate of Bucharest and its name is currently changed to the Church of San Daniele.
