The Artist and the Book: From Rodin to Picasso. A Selection of Beaux-Livres from a Bibliophile’s Collection
When: From November 10th,2024 to March 2nd, 2025
Where: Ricci Oddi Modern Art Gallery, via San Siro 13, Piacenza
In the Honor Hall of the Ricci Oddi Modern Art Gallery in Piacenza, a selection of thirty rare and precious books from the collection of bibliophile Giovanni Aldobrandini is on display.
Curated by Veronica Bassini, the exhibition explores the connection between art and the book through works by artists such as Picasso, Dalí, Matisse, Rodin, and others. Focusing on the first fifty years of the 20th century, the exhibition highlights the essential features of beaux-livres: books produced in limited editions by expert craftsmen and artists, where literary content and visual art merge, making the book itself a true work of art.
A special focus of the exhibition is on Surrealism, marking the centenary of its birth in 2024. Works by Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, Salvador Dalí, Man Ray, and texts by André Breton and Paul Éluard showcase the great interest visual artists had in the book as a space for research, reflection, and collaboration.
