The idea to gather inside the huge Palazzo Farnese all the Civic Museum Collections dates back to 1909 thanks to an idea of Dionigi Barattieri.
The project was re-promoted in 1926 and completed in 1965 with the creation of the Farnese Complex restoration board.
The first section open to the public (the Civic Museums) was inaugurated only in 1988. A complete recovery of areas and exhibits was finally effective in autumn 1997 with the inauguration of the Art Gallery.
The Art Gallery, located on the palace first floor, it is the ideal location for Fasti Farnesiani, paintings celebrating the dynasty by Ilario Spolverini.
The most remarkable piece is Botticelli’s tondo Virgin adoring the Child with San Giovannino (1483-87).
